Our story
L'Arcada, which means 'the arch,' is located in the Sant Miquel de Campmajor valley in the province of Girona (northeast Spain) and recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. While many people have already experienced the wonderful atmosphere of this special place, we wanted to remind the story of how L'Arcada came to be what it is for those who have not yet been there or for those who have forgotten.
After several years of relatively unsuccessful church planting efforts, Dave and Debbie Frank felt that God was guiding them to take a different approach and develop a camp and conference center in the northeast corner of Spain. After receiving approval from GEM (Greater Europe Mission), they began searching for a suitable property, one that had specific characteristics and enough space to expand toward this new strategic vision.
After a somewhat discouraging period of five years, during which they waited on God, faced local and legal challenges, and suffered from a lack of funds, they found a property for sale in the Sant Miquel valley that met their needs and more.
So David and Jordi Vilahur went up to the property and toured much of it (about 300 hectares), thanking God for guiding them there, and prayed: 'Lord, we claim this beautiful place of Your creation for Your glory here in Europe, and we ask for Your guidance in the purchasing negotiations.'
Throughout the process, many things (and cultural influences) occurred that made it clear that God was guiding the way. From the original selling price of over a million dollars to negotiating a final price of around 500,000 dollars, and the fact that the owner allowed part of the balance to be paid over time without interest, it was evident that God preserved this property so that this work could move forward.
The first camp opened in 1991, and we pray that God continues to grow this place.
